About this page

Bedfordshire's causes, side by side with its businesses.

Bedfordshire Business exists to put local trade in front of local people — the independent shops, trades, cafés and service firms that keep Bedford, Luton, Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Biggleswade and every village in between working. The Community page is the other half of that story: the food banks, youth clubs, care projects, sports teams and faith groups that local businesses sponsor, fundraise for and volunteer with all year round.

Listing them together is deliberate. A charity that appears alongside the county's business directory is seen by the people most able to help — owners with budgets, staff with skills to donate, and residents already searching locally. Charities and non-profits pay a reduced £10/month rate because visibility should never be the thing standing between a good cause and its next volunteer.

How to submit

Listed in four steps

  1. 1. Create your free account. One login manages your listing, your details and any future changes.
  2. 2. Fill in the form once. Your name, category, town, contact details, a short description and — if you have them — your logo, photos, charity number, Volunteer and Donate links.
  3. 3. We review within 2 working days. A real person checks every submission. You'll see the status in your dashboard the whole time.
  4. 4. Activate and go live. Once approved we send a link to start your £10/month subscription, and your profile appears in the directory below with its own shareable page.

What gets approved

Our listing standards

  • • Registered charities, CICs, non-profits, and unincorporated grassroots groups.
  • • Based in Bedfordshire, or delivering a clear service to Bedfordshire residents.
  • • A working public email and phone number so supporters can actually reach you.
  • • An honest description of your work — no exaggerated claims or copied text.
  • • Where you hold one, a valid charity number we can check on the public register.

We decline party-political campaigning, anything promoting discrimination or harm, requests for money without a named organisation behind them, and purely commercial businesses — those belong in the main directory instead.

Why listings matter

Being found changes things

  • Volunteers find you first. Most people who want to help locally start with a search, not a phone call.
  • Donations get easier. Your Donate button sits one tap away from everything you do, with no middleman.
  • Businesses spot you. Local owners browse this site for partners, sponsorships and staff volunteering days.
  • You look credible. A complete profile, logo, photos and charity number reassure funders and first-time supporters.
  • One page to share everywhere. Use your profile link in posters, newsletters and social posts instead of five different links.

Approval criteria

Our official approval criteria

Every submission is read by a person against the same published standard, so approvals are predictable and fair. Meet these points and your profile goes live.

We review every submission within 2 working days. Every decision is logged with the reviewer, the timestamp and the reason.

1. Real, identifiable organisation

We only publish groups a resident could actually walk into, phone or email.

  • Legal or trading name matches the name given on the form.
  • A registered charity number, company number or a verifiable public presence (website, active social page, press coverage).
  • A working public email address on the organisation's own domain wherever one exists.
  • A contact person named on the submission who is authorised to act for the organisation.

2. Genuinely Bedfordshire

The directory is county-first. Out-of-county entries are rejected, not edited.

  • Address, town and postcode fall inside Bedfordshire (including Luton, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and recognised MK postcodes serving the county).
  • The service is delivered to Bedfordshire residents, not simply marketed at them.
  • Town matches the postcode supplied — mismatches go back to the submitter for correction.

3. Content quality

Profiles should read like the organisation wrote them, not like a keyword list.

  • 'Who we are', 'What we do' and 'How you can help' are each completed in plain English.
  • Description is at least two sentences, free of ALL-CAPS shouting and spam punctuation.
  • No pricing-only or offer-only copy in place of a description.
  • Logo and photos are the organisation's own or properly licensed, and are not stock images of unrelated subjects.

4. Trust and safety

Anything in this list is an immediate rejection, regardless of payment.

  • No hate speech, harassment, discriminatory or extremist content.
  • No adult services, gambling, weapons, vaping/tobacco sales, or high-cost credit.
  • No unevidenced medical, financial or legal claims.
  • No pyramid schemes, lead-farming or 'business opportunity' recruitment dressed as a community group.
  • Donation links resolve to the organisation's own recognised platform (JustGiving, Enthuse, PayPal Giving, its own site).

5. Duplicates and ownership

One profile per organisation per town.

  • No existing live profile for the same organisation and town — later duplicates are merged into the original.
  • Submissions made by an agency or volunteer on behalf of a group state that relationship.
  • Claims on an existing unclaimed profile are handled through the claim flow, not by re-submitting.
